Thanks to a 2006 Port Security Bill that had a last minute attachment known as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, the Department of Justice effectively shut down online poker operations for those residing in the USA. On April 15th, 2011, the DOJ seized the online domains of PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Ultimate Bet. Some smaller fringe operators continue to offer real-money games to US residents but the safety and/or accessibility of funds is a big question mark. Consider that player funds have yet to be released for both Full Tilt Poker and Ultimate Bet customers. PokerStars did pay out player funds and continues to offer real-money poker to non-US residents.
The next best option for US players is probably to join the World Poker Tour’s Club WPT. While not exactly “real money” play, you do get to play for prizes and even some cash - all for a set monthly fee that gives you unlimited play.
